The $ 4million Vunikawakawa Modular Bridge at Wailevu, Macuata will open a new door of opportunities for villagers.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka commissioned the 39.5 metres bridge on Thursday during his third day of a Northern Division tour,

There were jovial faces in the village with an atmosphere filled with singing and obvious happiness.

It was also the first time that Mr Rabuka went to the village.

Village headman, Ropate Rawaqa, said the bridge would benefit 120 villagers through transportation of produce for sale in Labasa and children’s access to education. Mr Rawaqa said without the bridge, they faced numerous challenges.

“We had to use huge pots to float children across the river to attend school or other activities. Those memories of hardship are over today,” he said.

“Students and villagers had to think twice during heavy rainfall whether to travel or not because of safety concerns.
