‘Chiefs of all provinces must be educated’

There is a need for the chiefs from all the provinces to be educated. This was part of the Turaga-ni-Yavusa Korolevu of Vunibau Village, Ratu Emosi Navunisaravi, submission at a public consultations on the review of the Great Council of Chiefs.
The consultations were held at Ro Kuruduadua House in Navua yesterday.
Ratu Emosi highlighted that chiefs must understand their roles and responsibilities and be educated on how to lead the vanua and know government plans moving forward.
“We all know the chiefs from each province and their roles in Fiji. Vulinitu (QVS) was established to educate the chiefs before they lead from their provinces and Fiji,” Ratu Emosi said.
“It is sad to see that our chiefs are now immature, lacking self-discipline and willpower and irresponsible in leading the vanua. They have forgotten their role and their obligation to the vanua.”
He said the role of the GCC meeting was to encourage and uplift the lot of the iTaukei.
“There should be workshops for chiefs on their role and there is a need to change their mindset be
cause if it is not done then the GCC meeting would be of no use,” he added.
“Advisory committee should also be formed where its members are educated and their role is to enlighten the chiefs on topics that need to be discussed and get the approval from GCC.”
GCC review team leader Jone Baledrokadroka acknowledged Ratu Emosi’s concerns which were noted by the committee and stated that they would be addressed by the relevant officials following the consultations.
Serua Provincial Council chair Joeli Ratulevu Cawaki confirmed that its representatives to the GCC meeting which will be held in Bau at the end of the month are Ratu Emosi, Ratu Sela Waiwaidilo and Ratu Epenisa Dovarua.
