The devastating toll of Monday’s road accidents serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for drivers to prioritise safety. Two separate incidents, occurring within the span of one day, resulted in the loss of three precious lives and landed several individuals in hospital.

The first incident unfolded along Valley Road at Nacocolevu, Sigatoka, where two vehicles collided head-on, unleashing a wave of destruction and despair.

The collision claimed the lives of three unsuspecting individuals, leaving their families shattered and communities reeling from the sudden tragedy.

Additionally, four people involved in the crash were rushed to the hospital. While one passenger was fortunate enough to receive the necessary treatment and was discharged, the pain and anguish from this catastrophic accident lingers on, serving as a somber reminder of how life is fragile.

In another heart-wrenching incident that took place in Labasa, along Bulileka Road at Vatunibale, a vehicle veered off road, crashing violently into a street light.

The impact inflicted injuries on seven passengers, further exacerbating the toll of human suffering.

Among the injured, five individuals required admission to the hospital, their bodies battered and lives uncertain.

Two others escaped with minor injuries; their wounds treated and later discharged.

Fiji Police Chief Operations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu, has expressed grave concerns over these incidents.

He passionately appeals to all drivers to drive with unwavering care, recognising that the lives of their passengers rest in their hands.

This call for responsibility becomes even more critical as the school holiday brings forth an influx of children eagerly enjoying their break.

Drivers must be extra vigilant, for the safety and well-being of these young souls depend on their conscientiousness.

While the Police continue it’s tireless efforts to ensure road safety through rigorous operations, ACP Driu insists that drivers themselves must adopt a proactive approach. Speeding and succumbing to pressure from passengers are never valid reasons to compromise safety.

Responsible drivers must prioritise the security and welfare of their passengers above all else.

The journey’s end time should never outweigh the value of human lives.

As investigations into these heart-wrenching incidents continue, it is crucial for drivers to recognise the importance of regular vehicle safety checks.

Drivers must take the initiative to inspect their vehicles meticulously, ensuring that they are in optimal condition and capable of running smoothly on the roads.

Neglecting such measures can have dire consequences, as witnessed in the recent tragedy.

The roads should be a pathway to possibilities, not a breeding ground for sorrow.

It is time for drivers to rise to the occasion, embracing their role as protectors of lives. Let us forge a collective commitment to prioritise safety, for every life lost or harmed is one too many..
