Police tipped to win Girmit comp

Team Police laced with national and district football reps is among the top favourites to win the inaugural Pacific Girmit Championsh­ip title at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, today.

This was after they defeated Nawaka Lions 4-1 and Saunaka Tigers 5-0 in their pool matches, which got underway on Saturday.

Police fielded star players like striker Sairusi Nalaubu, Praneel Naidu and Dev Raj.

Another team to be noted is Nadroga Stallions who had the likes of Ratu Anare, Ratu Dau, Sunny Deol and Jared Voi.

The side drew 0-0 with Green Stars and Bua 2-2.

In the Legends category, Lautoka had former reps of Maika Waqa, Jioji Rasila, Mohd Shaiyad, Bakalevu Moceimerek­e and Tevita Rasolo.

Korovuto Legends had the services of Watisoni Voli and Sanaila Dakaica.

The championsh­ip is organised by the Korovuto Sewa Sanstha in partnershi­p with the World Hindu Federation and Global Girmit Centre, proudly sponsored by Sigatoka Electric, RC Manubhai and Tour Managers.

Chairman Pravin Singh said, the tournament has begun to draw interest from overseas teams who want to take part next year.

“It is great to hear that this tournament has taken everyone by surprise.

“The good part is that national and district reps are also in action. Former reps are also in the Legends category.

“What a way to support this tournament,” he said.

Nadi, Sigatoka Special

Administra­tor Lawrence Kumar said this is a great way to promote Nadi.

“We have great facilities here in Nadi and it does boast a great crowd when it comes to sporting events and may the best team win,” he said.
