The recent surge in alleged thefts and robberies has ignited a deep sense of concern within communities across the Central, Western, and Northern divisions.

As the number of such incidents continues to rise, Police are working hard to get the perpetrators face the brunt of the law.

Sometimes they are caught, but so often, the perpetrators are skilled and escape with little to no trace, leaving the victims physically and mentally traumatised.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu acknowledged the opportunistic nature of most of these robberies, indicating a worrying trend.

Such actions not only rob individuals of their hardearned possessions but also leave lasting emotional scars and erode the sense of safety within our neighbourhoods.

One cannot overlook the distressing incident in Labasa, where $12,000 cash was allegedly stolen from the Interlink Shipping Line Limited office.

Furthermore, reports from Suva reveal a morning robbery in Shalimar Street, where innocent residents became victims of a terrifying ordeal.

Joana Ravono and her friends, enjoying a peaceful gathering, found themselves at the mercy of five masked individuals armed with knives.

The trauma they endured serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the decay in moral values that allows such crimes to persist.

In a Facebook post this week, another unsuspecting victim was travelling in a taxi along Grantham Road in Suva when her mobile was allegedly snatched from her hand through the window of the car.

Amid these unsettling events, it is crucial to assess the effectiveness of the Neighbourhood Watch Zone, particularly in residential areas of urban centres.

The question arises: Is it still active? Are we fostering a collective spirit of vigilance, unity, and protection within our communities?

The current wave of robberies serves as a wake-up call, demanding that we reinforce the bonds of trust, support, and cooperation amongst neighbours.

Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating these incidents, with the hope of identifying and apprehending the culprits responsible.

The Fiji Police Force is committed to bringing justice to the victims and curbing the growing threat to the security and well-being of hardworking Fijians.

To those perpetrating these acts of theft and robbery, we implore you to pause and consider the consequences of your actions.

Cease preying upon those who strive diligently to make an honest living, for the erosion of moral values in society only leads to further chaos and suffering.

Let empathy guide your choices, and may the realization of the pain inflicted upon innocent individuals inspire a change of heart.

As a community, let us unite against these acts of predation, providing support to those affected and cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of our neighbourhoods.
