In the face of mounting environmental challenges, mere discussions and pledges are no longer enough to combat climate change. Concrete action on the ground is the need of the hour.

The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, P.S. Karthigeyan, underscored this urgency during the commissioning of the solarisation project on Bau Island yesterday.

He highlighted the pivotal role of renewable energy in fostering environmental sustainability.

This project by the Government of India was initiated following the success of the same at the official residence of the President three months ago.

From inception to inauguration, the project has set a remarkable record in terms of swift implementation, demonstrating a commendable commitment to tangible action.

Appreciation was extended to Ratu Epenisa Seru Cakobau, the paramount chief, whose generous support has played a significant role in achieving this outstanding feat.

The collaboration between stakeholders and leaders also paved the way for the transformative milestone. The High Commissioner said the newly-commissioned solarisation project would serve as a powerful message to the people, encouraging them to embrace solar energy as the way forward.

It is a call to action, inspiring a mass movement towards solarisation in Fiji and paving the path for a renewable revolution.

The significance of the solarisation project extends beyond mere infrastructure.

It symbolises a collective commitment to environmental stewardship, heralding a new era of sustainability in Fiji.

As the Great Council of Fiji (GCC) meeting gets underway today, with the meeting proper beginning tomorrow, may this sustainability project, be a pathway for the chiefs who will be there to adopt and apply it in their own village and provincial setting. By embracing solar energy collectively, the nation not only mitigates the adverse environmental impacts of fossil fuels, but also showcases its dedication to combating climate change and preserving the pristine beauty of its islands.

This landmark achievement serves as an inspiration for other villages grappling with climate challenges.

It underscores the fact that renewable energy is not just an option but an imperative pathway towards a sustainable future.

And our nation’s pursuit of solarisation sends a resounding message to the global community, emphasising the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Together, we can forge a brighter, cleaner, and greener future for generations to come.
