Pacific Rugby is the winner: Sorensen

Despite the 46 – 47 loss, the Moana Pasifika team won the hearts of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua fans as they put on a gallant performanc­e at Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday. Speaking to SUNsports, Moana Pasifika Rugby Franchise vicechairm­an Debbie Sorensen said that it was a privilege to play the Fijian Drua at their home ground. “We are delighted to be in Lautoka as it is a fantastic day for rugby and we’re looking forward to a great contest,” she said.

Sorensen who is originally from Leimatu’a in Vava’u, Tonga said that Moana Pasifika is a new franchise and there is room to grow and learn.

“It is a fantastic day for Pacific rugby so we’re winning no matter who wins,” she said.

“We have been very grateful to (head coach) Aaron Mauger, he’s given us a gift like no other and we really acknowledg­e his sacrifice and service to Moana and we wish him well,” she added.

Sorensen said that Super Rugby Pacific is a great pathway for players in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

“This is real rugby, we (Pacific) are rugby. We will be recruiting a new coach so this is a story in progress,” she said.

Sorensen said that they wished centre Levi Aumua the best in his future endeavors as he joins the Crusaders next season.

“What it demonstrat­es is that his two years with us has really worked well for him. His rugby has improved and here he is on the verge of greatness. We’re sad that he’s leaving us but it’s a fantastic opportunit­y for him,” she said. Sorenson revealed that they intend to host games in Samoa, Tonga and for the team to be back in Fiji next year.

“It’s a fantastic crowd, there’s a brilliant atmosphere and this is rugby at its best,” she said.
