TAVEUNI FARMER RETURNS TO THE ISLAND TO TAKE UP FARMING

-

Joji Qalovi is originally from Vatukalo Village in Ovalau but is now residing in Somosomo Village, Taveuni. He had been living abroad for eight years before returning to Taveuni to take up farming on a full time basis.

His main crop is dalo but he also plants vegetables and watermelon for additional income.

“There is a lot of money in farming and all we need is to work hard to toil the land. I decided to move back to Fiji because there is definitely no place like home. I now have 16 acres of dalo, yaqona and assorted vegetables,” said Mr Qalovi.

Through money earned from farming, Mr Qalovi purchased a 4-wheel vehicle and also built his house.

“For the past five years, I have been seriously involved in my farm and all income earned has paid off as I have also invested in my children’s education.”

The hard working farmer supplies his produce to Laucala Island Resort as well as nearby resorts.

He adds that he does not regret taking up farming on a full time basis and will continue as long as he has the energy to do so.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna recently visited his farm during an official visit and urged him to continue.

“We need more farmers to step up and toil the land for a living. We are especially encouraging the youths to seriously look into farming and assist in feeding Fijians as well as feeding the export markets,” said Hon. Tunabuna.

“We encourage Fijians to visit your nearest agriculture station and talk to our staff about your plans on farming. Once you get to know our staff, you will be able to coordinate better in terms of farming programmes, activities and in turn assistance,” added Hon. Tunabuna.
