Discussions with Tourism Fiji have been made to have the Namoli Green Night Food Market promoted towards local and overseas tourists looking for local delicacies. Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Katamotu revealed this during the opening of the new Lautoka Market last week.

He said through initiatives and programmes under MSME Fiji (Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs and Communications), vendors could access funding, training, and mentoring, fostering economic empowerment and resilience within their communities. “The socio-economic benefits of the Namoli Green Night Food Market are vast, creating opportunities for livelihoods while generating revenue for the Council,” Mr Katamotu said.

“It aligns with our vision of empowering Municipal Councils to achieve financial sustainability, enabling them to reinvest in vital services for the people.”

The new market is the Lautoka City Council’s project.

“The council has financed it through a combination of internal cash flows and a bank loan. The revenue generated through stall fees and advertising at for this market will go towards achieving the return on investment for this venture,” Mr Katamotu said.

“The Night Food Market will allow the public to enjoy local cuisine and I am told that these women make some of the best food. “Our aim is to create a platform to help incubate fresh new ideas by building opportunities for local business and bring the community together.”

He said the talks with Tourism Fiji were to have the market promoted as a as a street-food concept.
