Head Prefects Eye Better Academic Standings
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School head prefects are psyched up to help improve the school’s academic results this year.
Head girl, Disha Aarohi Kripa Chand, said her main aim this year was to create opportunities for the holistic development of students. “Not everyone is academically smart and not everyone can learn at the same pace, however with activities like peer tutoring, I believe we can help level everyone up together without leaving anyone behind,” she said.
“When it comes to disciplinary issues, I think teacher and student don’t really work now because more students are more fearful of sharing with adults nowadays.
“But if I could get student prefects to create that environment where students consider us a safe space and are able to talk about their ideas, feelings and all with us, I think that could work.”
The 18-year-old girl received the second place award in her Year 12 annual examination last year.
Head boy Faiyaz said there was going to be a lot of challenges incurred, however he was adamant that working together was the answer to success.
“I received a lot of corrections, guidance and direction along the way and I believe humility is a huge quality, because you can’t always be right,” he said.
“Students must accept it when they’re being corrected and use that to mold them.”
MGM principal, Sanjay Raman, said he was proud of the two leaders and their acceptance to take on the role of leading 1100 students. “They have come a long way and know the system really well and they will be taking full charge and ensure students behavior improves,” he said.
“We are focused on quality and quantity passes right now. It’s first the academic and then sports and other activities.”
Because the school is still recounting some of the students’ external exam marks, Mr Raman said the dux award will be given during Mahatma Gandhi Day.
