Volkswagen slashes EV prices in NZ

- Source: stuff.com

Having rolled out considerable discounts on its fully electric ID.4 and ID.5 line-up in late 2023, Volkswagen New Zealand has carved up to $20,000 from selected ID EV models.

Debuting a new marketing campaign for the discount overnight, the deal sees the entry-level ID.4 Pro and ID.5 Pro prices get slashed from $79,990 and $86,490 to $59,990 and $67,490, a significant drop of $20,000 and $19,000, respectively.

The flagship ID.5 Pro+ has also been given a discount; its price dropping from $95,490 to $88,490. The ID.4 Pro+ is not listed on the brand’s website.

Volkswagen noted that at least part of the price cut is likely to be permanent, noting that both models now have a MSP of $74,990.

Volkswagen is also in the midst of discounting some of its other SUV models, listing on its website that the T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace, and Touareg are all privy to discounts of up to $10,000 “for a limited time”.

The news comes on the heels of Volkswagen’s local arm conceding that sales in the electric vehicle market have “stalled”, and that it expects EVs to account for just 10% of its sales this year, down from a forecast of 30 per cent last year.

The brand recently confirmed that New Zealand would not be getting the recently unveiled ID.7 sedan and wagon.

It also recently confirmed that the ID.5 is being dropped once current stock is sold, leaving just the ID.4 and the forthcoming ID.3 hatchback.

The discount makes the ID.4 and ID.5 comfortably the cheapest fully electric options in the mid-size SUV segment.

Both are notably much cheaper than their Volkswagen Group SUV cousins; the Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 e-tron.

The Enyaq is priced from $79,990, having been a discount of its own months after launch last year. The Q4, with its more premium positioning, is priced from $99,990.

Both the ID.4 and ID.5 come with a single-motor 150kW/310Nm powertrain, sending power to the rear wheels. Both get a 82kWh li-ion battery, with range on the WLTP cycle rated at 530km for the more sculpted ID.5 and 519km for the ID.4.
