Afather cooked his son breakfast on Friday not knowing that it would be the last time he would do so.

Mukesh Chand was found motionless, in a pool of blood on the road in Labasa Town on that day.

He was hit by a vehicle while trying the cross the road. He was taken to the hospital but died the next day.

Divisional Police Commander North Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka said they were waiting for the postmortem examination to determine the cause of death before they could proceed further.

The vehicle was driven by a 32-year-old woman.

Yesterday, deceased’s son, Darmesh said on that tragic day, his father cooked him breakfast and went off to town to buy fish for his favourite meal, curry fish.

“He told me to eat before I went to work,” Darmesh said.

“I was told that while he was crossing the road to go to the vegetable market, a driver allegedly hit him.”

It was around midday.

Darmesh was emotional when he shared that it was only a year ago, he had lost his mother to cancer. “My father used to look after me while my elder brother and his family were away in New Zealand,” he said.

“He had no medical history and worked around the house and walked to town whenever there was a need to do grocery shopping.” The late Mr Chand would have turned 60 on April 21. He is survived by his two sons.

Speaking on road accidents in the North town, Labasa Town Council special administrator chair Paul Jaduram said they planned to have a meeting with the Fiji Roads Authority to discuss a traffic management plan.

“We are sad to hear of this incident and request pedestrians and motorists to be careful,” Mr Jaduram said.
