Women’s group leader believes in investing and empowering women
The oldest participant of an event in Labasa has encouraged women to educate themselves to adapt to a changing society.
Ram Rathi, 94, of Tuatua in Labasa was given special recognition for her participation at International Women’s Day event organised by Vanua Levu Shree Sanatan Dharm Nari Sabha.
“With the changing lifestyle comes new information and I encourage women to educate themselves so that they can teach their children to survive in this modern world,” she said at at Tuatua Gyatri Temple on Saturday. Meanwhile, group president Praveena Nand believed that investing in women will empower them and it can reduce social problems.
Vanua Levu Shree Sanatan Dharm Sabha Fiji was established last year in Labasa.
It was the first time for the organisation to observe the celebration which saw more than 100 women attending.
“We had numerous stakeholders from Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Agriculture, Labasa Women Crisis Centre, bank officers, principals and school teachers as speakers,” Ms Nand said.
“For some participants it was the first time for them to receive new information like where to get help if they are victims of domestic violence and how to be successful entrepreneurs in agriculture sector.”
She thanked the Ministry of Health and Medical Services for providing free medical check up and Vanua Levu Shree Sanatan Dharm Sabha Fiji president Vinesh Nand for supporting their women empowerment program. The chief guest, Darshani Rao, who is a lawyer, encouraged women to have self-belief first to be in the position to empower others.
