Transformative potential of AI technologies has ushered in a new era of possibilities revolutionising the way people live and work, says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Medium Enterprise, Manoa Kamikamica. Mr Kamikamica made the comment to mark World Consumer Rights Day yesterday.

The emphasis on harnessing the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) reflects the nation’s commitment to leverage in cutting – edge technologies for the betterment of society.

Mr Kamikamica said this year’s theme resonated deeply with evolving landscape of technological advancements.

“As we navigate this complex landscape, it is incumbent upon us as a nation to uphold principles of fairness and transparency,” Mr Kamikamica said.

“The Government is committed to fostering an enabling environment that priorities consumer protection and promotes responsible innovation in the digital sphere.”

Through strategic partnership with consumer organisation industry and stakeholders and civil society, the government aims to harness the potential for collective benefit to the nation.

He said the digital strategy would work on looking at the effective introduction of AI.

“There is real opportunity here,” he said.

“If used properly, generative AI could enhance consumer care and improve channels of redress.”

However, it will also have serious implications for consumer safety and digital fairness.

Mr Kamikamica said with developments taking place at breakneck speed, we must move quickly to ensure a fair and responsible AI future.
