Union takes neutral stand on repeat system
The Fiji Teachers Union has taken a neutral stand on the proposal to reintroduce repeat system in schools for underperforming students.
Union general secretary, Muniappa Goundar, said the idea to afford students, who may not excel in external examination, was commendable in principle
In a media interview this month Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, indicated that Government would consider revisiting the no-repeat system introduced by the FijiFirst Government.
However, Mr Goundar said several considerations warrant careful examination.
Benefits of repeat system
Mr Goundar said the repeat system could potentially provide a lifeline for students to bolster their academic performance and attain the requisite competencies for progression.
The repeat system will enable fairness on the part of those students working hard in their studies to reach the next grade.
While others not performing, would have to assert their improvement to proceed to the next class.
Careful considerations
He said it was imperative to ensure that adequate support mechanisms were in place to facilitate academic growth during the repeat years.
This included tailored remedial programmes and mentorship initiatives.
Mr Goundar advocated for the provision of free education grants to all repeaters as crucial to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities.
“Financial barriers should not impede the ability of students to benefit from the repeat system, as socioeconomic disparities should not dictate one’s educational trajectory,” he said.
The risk of stigmatisation and psychological ramifications is a possibility from such a system where the student’s self-esteem and motivation can be affected. Another potential drawback to the system is the logistical challenges of accommodating repeaters within existing schools.
