Alisi Dilagi, 42, had just bought groceries and taken it to her uncle so that he could enjoy a nice meal on Good Friday, but little did she know he would pass away on the same night. Mr Isoa Ligairi became the latest road fatality victim after being bumped in a hit and run accident on Thursday night.

“This is the most painful Easter for my family knowing that my uncle, Isoa Ligairi, is lying in the mortuary,” Ms Dilagi said.

She recalls spending the last few hours with her uncle at Naqere Housing in Savusavu on Thursday. “He is my father’s youngest brother, and since he had no immediate family or children, he would always come and spend time with us at home,” Ms Dilagi said.

“At 6pm, I packed some groceries to prepare meal for Good Friday since he lives alone at his house in Levuka Village.”

No one thought he would pass away that same night.

“I was told by the Savusavu Police Station officers that a 26-year-old man allegedly bumped my uncle at Levuka Road junction and drove away,” the mother of three children said.

“The driver reported at the Savusavu Police Station that he didn’t stop to take him to hospital because he was afraid after recalling the murder at Waisali, Savusavu last week.”

Police officers responded immediately and found her uncle dead on the road.

Police report

Divisional Police Commander North Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroa said the 54-year-old deceased was the country’s latest road fatality victim.

“The driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle resulting in the unfortunate accident,” SSP Baledrokadroka said.

The driver remains in custody as investigations continues.

The road death toll stands at 16 compared to 22 for the same period last year.
