Wheels of justice

-

Rajend Naidu, Sydney, Australia

As a layman who has witnessed inordinate delays in court cases of ordinary citizens I am told to appreciate that the wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine.

I am therefore perplexed by the speed with which the Bainimarama and Qiliho case has progressed.

Is that to serve the ends of justice or some other agenda?

I ask because I know the justice system was cynically manipulated by the post coup regime in Fiji to put away people regarded as political opponents and critics.

Have things changed?

Or, are we witnessing more of the same?

Improper disposal Narayan Reddy , Lautoka

I agree with Fiji Roads Authority that one of the contributing factor of flooding is the improper disposal of household waste in our creeks, drains and rivers, but the aging drains is another problem as seen lately in Lautoka.

The aging drains cannot cater for increases water volume from the frequent heavy rainfall. Some of these drains were build in 1950’s to 1970’s and at that time there were less development.

It has been a ongoing problem for sometime and the only solution is for everyone to work together and stop the improper disposal of household rubbish in those drains.

BBQ stalls Sanjeet Prasad, Labasa

Recently two restaurants in Labasa were closed by Ministry of Health (MOH) due to their non-compliance with food safety regulations. It’s great to see that MOH is coming down hard on restaurants not following proper guidelines.

This proactive stance by the MOH is praiseworthy.

Could the MOH extend its scrutiny to roadside BBQ stalls as well?

Upon observation, it appears that some of these stalls may not be upholding adequate hygiene and food preparation standards.

Out of curiosity, I’m interested in knowing how vendors who prepare food at home for sale in markets or on the streets are monitored.

Does the Ministry of Health conduct home visits to ensure food preparation standards are being followed?

Road condition Wise Muavono, Lautoka

If Fiji was again to be ceded, I’d rather it be to the Romans. After weeks of torrential rain, we desperately need our roads resurfaced.

To the GCC Noleen Hazelman, Savusavu

Dear GCC,

With relation to indigenous affairs and to the welfare of Fiji as your first nation and with all due respect to you, our first minds and indigenous leaders, I make this request. Could you consider solutions to the following grave issues that are plaguing our communities, towns and cities and are becoming a high risk to the happiness and peace of your future, our future, and to the future of those to come. And I ask:

1. Why are our prisons filled mostly with indigenous law breakers?

2. Why are the majority of our street kids indigenous?

3. Why are you resource rich but cash poor?

4. Why do you not entertain changes to your indigenous culture, yet you allow a coup culture to overshadow us?

5. Why is it that I have witnessed children as young as two years old getting physically abused by their parents and relatives and
