Playing at home in front of family is always special for Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua women flanker Sulita Waisega. The Nakawaga, Mali, Macuata lass was crucial in their 19-5 win against Western Force last Saturday when she scored their opening try.

The 20-year-old shares maternal links to Nakama Village, also in Macuata.

Being thrashed, 61-22, by Waratahs women in their first home match motivated Waisega and her side to work hard and secure a win at home.

She dedicated her try to her late uncle, Apisai Mule who passed away in the United States last month.

“I want to dedicate my try to my late uncle, Ta Mule, he motivates me and that was for him,” she said. “I think this is one of the best feeling I’ve never experienced to play and win at home.

“We lost last week so we had something to make up for and to come with the win with our last home game.

“The previous week’s loss motivated us, it’s not a good feeling to lose with those big points especially in front of the home crowd.” Waisega joined the Drua women last year following her Rugby World Cup debut.

She was awarded the Top Tackler for the Drua versus Reds game in Round 1, with 11 tackles and has scored two tries so far this season. She hopes that the Fijian ladies will secure their third win against Brumbies this Saturday in Canberra, Australia.

“My learning is to become better at every game and try to make use of every opportunity I get,” Waisega said.

“I think we going to go back, reset and start from the bottom again, we want to get that win this week. “My family and friends and people who have been with me from the beginning motivate me in every game I play and in the position that I play; I’m going to have to show at every game.”

Waisega has no rush to return to school; she still has a lot of game time ahead and plans to continue her studies later.

When asked for a comment on Waisega, head coach Mosese Rauluni said: “She did really well; it was a good team effort.” “Everyone worked hard, when the reserves came on, I was really impressed.”
