Home to Fiji’s Finest Curries
Ensconced in the heart of Moala Street in Samabula, Suva, Zamzam Restaurant stands as a testament to the rich culinary heritage, stemming from Fiji’s Friendly North.
Established in 2017 by Rashida Dean, a culinary enthusiast with roots deeply ingrained in the northern reaches of Labasa, Zamzam has become a beacon for curry lovers far and wide.
From its humble beginnings with just three staff members in Nina House, Suva, to its current bustling location in Samabula, Zamzam has carved its name as a go-to destination for authentic Fijian Indian cuisine.
I had the pleasure of delving into the origins of Zamzam with Rashida Dean herself, who shared her journey with me.
“I always had a hobby of cooking authentic Fiji Indian curries, learning well from my great grandmother,” she said.
Her passion for preserving the flavours of yesteryears, reminiscent of the dishes her ancestors used to make, sparked the inception of Zamzam. “I feel happy when people love to eat with homemade taste that reminds them of their olden days,” she said with a warm smile.
Menu
Zamzam’s menu boasts an impressive array of over 40 different curries, each prepared fresh daily. When asked about the most popular dish, Rashida mentioned the jungli murga curry (fresh chicken curry), duck curry, and fresh fish curry as customer favourites.
“It’s hard to name the most favourite,” she chuckled.
“But these three are cherished by many.”
The secret behind these delectable recipes lies in the homemade masala passed down through generations, a legacy from Rashida’s great grandmother.
Incorporating locally sourced ingredients is a priority at Zamzam.
“Most of the items we use are locally sourced,” Rashida explained.
From meats to packaging, every effort is made to support local producers and businesses.
As for seasonal specialties, Zamzam takes pride in offering their full menu year-round, ensuring customers can savour their favourite flavours whenever they please.
Customer feedback holds paramount importance at Zamzam. Rashida and her team strive to continuously improve, taking both positive and negative feedback in their stride.
“All feedback from customers we take as priority,” she said.
“And work on ourselves to improve on a daily basis.”
The perfect curry
When asked about what makes a perfect curry, Rashida’s response was simple yet profound. “I believe making any curry from your heart with good intentions makes it a perfect curry.”
It’s this dedication to authenticity and passion for flavour that sets Zamzam apart.
Reflecting on memorable experiences, Rashida fondly recalled the days of firewood cooking, a practice not commonly seen in urban Fiji anymore.
The distinct taste and aroma from those times are etched in the memories of Zamzam’s patrons. As for future plans, Rashida remained focused on maintaining the quality and taste that Zamzam is known for.
“Currently focusing on the existing restaurant, ensuring the same satisfaction for all our beloved customers,” she said.
Zamzam Restaurant transcends mere dining; it offers a passage through history, a tribute to heritage, and a showcase of the culinary excellence found in Fiji’s welcoming northern region.
For anyone in Suva yearning for a taste of authentic tradition, Zamzam is the ultimate destination.
