Delai confident of positive results
Suva Grammar School athletics coach Jone Delai is confident that their 12-week preparation will produce favourable results for his team in the Suva Zone Two competition.
The two-day competition got underway at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.
“In training, I handpicked athletes with potential particularly the female students to participate in the zone,” the former Pacific sprint king said.
“The school has been helpful to us by allowing us to train half an hour early before school ends.”
Delai said the bad weather in the past two weeks was an obstacle in their preparation. “Water cut was also an issue but we still managed to train,” he said.
“I had only allowed our field athletes to participate in the Easter athletics games.”
Delai said he had to hold back his track athletes for the Easter games to avoid injury prior to the Zone meet.
“We have a good balance in both tracks and field athletes. We have a good set of sub junior athletes that will set us up this year.”
Delai said he is ready to rotate the athletes in various events.
“This tactic worked for us in the senior girls’ 4 x 400m event. I told the students that we want to take the best athletes to the nationals.”
Delai urged Grammar supporters and ex-scholars to turn up today to cheer on the athletes. Grammar leads the boy’s tally with one gold medal followed by Marist Brothers with one silver medal and Ratu Latianana Secondary School with one bronze medal.
Rampur College leads the girl’s tally with one gold, Ratu Latianara Secondary School with a silver and bronze medals.
