Rural School Invests in Sports
Dawasamu Secondary School (DSS) in Tailevu North has invested in their students’ sporting talents to create a winning formula.
This is to boost the school’s sports campaign and an opportunity for their students to secure a future through their sports talents.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, DSS athletics team manageress Talica Mudunavere said they had prepared thoroughly for the Tailevu Zone with their female athletes being their trump card.
They however finished third in the girl’s division of the Tailevu Zone at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.
“It was a good progress,” Mudunavere said.
“We were second on day one with a difference of four gold medals. As of last year it was a difference of 10 gold on the first day.
“We didn’t face any challenges, but I’m thankful to the girls for their great display of athleticism.”
Mudunavere said a few of their athletes participated in the Under-18 school girl’s sevens rugby during the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens. They won the tournament’s U18 title.
“Sera Valu who won the best Under-18 female player in the Marist Sevens is also participating in the zone,” she said.
“She ran in the 400 metres and the 4x100m relay.”
Mudunavere said most of their students also participated in the weekly Royal Tea Ranadi Cup rugby competition.
“Ten students are playing for the Rewa while eight represent Northland,” she said.
“It’s a big boost for us as this term we’ve been preparing the girls for the Royal Tea Ranadi and the Weetbix Raluve competition, where we are the defending champions.” Mudunavere said they had prepared their students well for the Tailevu Zone with the hope of qualifying for the Coca-Cola Games. Meanwhile, Ratu Kadavulevu School topped the boy’s medal tally of the Tailevu Zone with 24 gold, 26 silver and 16 bronze medals.
The girl’s division was won by Tailevu North College with 22 gold medals, 12 silver and 12 bronze.
