The younger sister of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua fullback Ilaisa Droasese, was the toast of the Island Pharmacy Ba women’s rugby team as they held Kadavu 30-30 in their Royal Tea Ranadi Cup clash in Lawaqa on Saturday.

Sereana Naweni, 17, was on target with her penalty attempts as they came from behind to hold Kadavu and qualify for the playoffs. Ba women’s head coach Saiyasi Koroi said they were expecting a tough game but he is grateful to the hard work put together by the players.

“Kadavu is a champion team so to come out with a draw is a good result,” Koroi said.

“Our players have now showed courage compared to the first round of the Ranadi Cup, and today is a much bigger improvement.” Koroi believes they are at the same level with Kadavu and they can be better.

“Most of my players played soccer, they are learning the game fast and adapting to it as well,” Koroi said. “Our kicker, Sereana has really helped our team and players. Some of the penalties she kicked have really allowed our players to rest and regroup. She has a 95 per cent kicking accuracy and she can kick with both legs.

“She is a promising talent and like his brother (Droasese), she will reach great heights,” he said.

Koroi believes young woman like Naweni should be given a chance to go through the Fiji Rugby’s High Performance Unit and learn more about the game.

Naweni is also pleased with her team-mates for braving the scorching heat and facing a much bigger and experienced team.

“In over 12 weeks, these girls have really learned a lot and with their hard work, we are here,” the former Fiji Under-17 football defender said.

“We will go back and work on our forwards, just a few little things to polish up but we will be ready for our quarter final match at (Ratu) Cakobau Park.”
