Man to spend 7 years in prison

A 42-YEAR-OLD Nadi man has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raping a 22-year-old woman in 2016.

The victim was 19 years old at the time and had consumed alcohol with the accused and a few other relatives before the offence took place. The accused raped her when she fell asleep and the incident was witnessed by a relative who informed the victim the next day. High Court judge Justice Rangajeeva Wimalasena said the father of four had committed a very serious offence.

The accused was given 30 days to appeal the sentence.
