Wristband for diabetics

- By WANSHIKA KUMAR

A TOTAL of 500 diabetes medical wristbands were gifted and distributed to Type 1 diabetic patients at the Young Diabetes Fiji peer group training at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) hospital auditorium recently.

Diabetes Fiji community program co-ordinator Marawa Kini said the bands would educate the public on how to approach and assist a diabetic in Fiji.

“It will make the public be aware of the potential dangers faced by diabetics all over Fiji and create awareness by educating them,” he said.

“Having a medical wristband for diabetes will instantly provide respondents on a diabetic’s condition and allow them to provide a diabetic with proper emergency care that is needed.”

He said being diabetic did not restrict them from travelling, but wearing a band every time they leave home could protect their lives.

“Diabetics should always wear

the bracelet where it can be spotted easily as it can mean the difference between living a healthy life and suffering major medical consequences.”

Mr Kini said diabetic wristbands would give diabetics a peace of mind and allow them to enjoy life.

“Being diabetic is not easy, but if managed properly, it can allow diabetics to live life as usual or even better.”

The bands were gifted by Devina Chaudhary who said the accessory would allow people to know the immediate actions to take.

“It is an alert band and in case you get low sugar, you get unconscious then people around you will know how to treat you and if they cannot treat you, they will take you to the hospital,” she said.

She urged patients to wear the diabetes medical ID every time they go outside.

“Let’s be strong, keep connected and protect ourselves.

“I know you will be shy to tell the public about your medical condition, but you have to be strong in order to keep yourselves protected.”

The diabetes medical wristband has a small emblem on a bracelet bearing a message that the wearer has an important medical condition, which might require immediate attention.
