Constitutional review

- By LUKE RAWALAI

THE Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) is receiving submissions for the party’s constitutional review which is underway.

Party general secretary Emele Duituturaga said since the party’s suspension in May this year, its members recognised the importance of the constitution and the need to revise it.

She said she was tasked by the management board to work with the review working committee chaired by Semesa Karavaki, former magistrate Seromi Dokonivalu. Pita Waqavonovono, Losena Talebula and lawyer Saniana Radrodro.

“It is not necessary legal work but the team is an infusion of young and old minds, mainly stalwarts of the party, developing a frame and structuring how people look at the party and how members look at the systems of the party,” she said.

“Key issues raised during the management board were the need for decentralisation, we have 28 constituencies and the focus now is how do we make that work for us, how do we have this almost complex structure, given that Fiji has only one constituency, how do we make that work for us and how do we make sure that translates into votes.

“The review will also determine what the party is about, it will be a rebranding of the party and the new constitution should be presented at the annual general meeting on November 28.

“The constitutional review committee has begun work and we have received online submissions while key people have been identified to submit their submissions.”

Ms Duituturaga said in its second phase, the party would engage a drafter who could help the committee draft the amendments.
