MGM legacy

-

MAHATMA Gandhi left behind a legacy to inspire and unify mankind. MGM High School has been named after Gandhi. On the occasion of Gandhi day (2nd October), I wish to thank all the staff, principal, vice principal, assistant principal, students, management members of Gujarat Education Society and trustees of MGM High School, past and present, for their hard work, sacrifice, dedication and devotion to MGM High School and education in Fiji.

I pay my sincere gratitude to the people who started the MGM School in the 1960s. When we reflect, we can imagine the initial struggles, anxieties, trials, and tribulations they went through. Through their relentless toil, perseverance, endurance and positive attitude, MGM High School has been built on the basis of Gandhian values of education, peace, truth, cleanliness, friendship, forgiveness, perseverance, and simple living.

The MGM High School Mission statement is very relevant today: “To achieve academic excellence and to nurture learning for life through the integration of enduring values so that students become worthy and caring citizens of Fiji.”

I consider myself fortunate to have served MGM High School as the principal for 13 years. I am delighted to see that the management has heavily invested in the new impressive infrastructure with state of the art facilities to take education to greater heights.

This means that students will have greater access to modern facilities and new technology. It looks like a mini university. Perhaps, later on the management could consider setting up a university.

It is heartening to see that the alumni of MGM High School are in positions of responsibilities in government and non-government organisations in Fiji and overseas.

I thank the principal Sanjay Raman, admin officer Roshni Prasad, the school management, Gujarat Education Society secretary Manhar Narsey, trustees – Mulchand Patel, Maganlal Mohanlal, Bachobhai Patel, Satish Parshotam, Virsukh Lal, Kamlesh Kumar, the teachers, the support staff and the students for keeping up the values and principles of MGM High School. In fact, we should all follow the key Gandhian ideologies in our life for a prosperous, healthy and sustainable future.

My best wishes to MGM for more success and progress. Mahatma Gandhi continues to inspire us even today and his ideas are still relevant to us. Let us all take a pledge of “being the change we want to see in the world” and take steps to make Fiji better and prosperous in every way possible.

Times 26th September, 2020, that the Hon Minister of Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau is deciding to lift the ban of beche-de-mer on December, 2020, pending the outcome of stock assessment exercise.

If any exercise our Ministry of Fisheries has to do, they should work with overseas counterparts through Foreign Affairs Bilateral Agreement to find out how many beche-de-mer are in stock at the back alley of Chinatown in Hong Kong and mainland China. Please for our future generation’s sake, do not lift the ban because it will only benefit certain businessmen only who buy from the locals at a very low price but make hugh profit because they increase the selling price to their consumers overseas.

Hon Minister, as a common simple Fijian citizen, I beg you please do not give in to the pressure from these businessmen by justifying COVID-19 Financial Impact. Keep the ban on beche – de mer, turtles and other species of fish in the name of “Ocean Bio-Diversity”.
