Sigatoka teams want to create rugby league upsets

- By ZANZEER SINGH

SIGATOKA-BASED clubs Burdekin Tyre Roosters and Coastline Roos will be out to record upsets in round seven of the Vodafone Championship Maroons State competition next week in order to move up into the top three on the points table.

Both the Burdekin Tyre Roosters and Coastline Roos sit out of the top three with Sabeto Roosters leading the charge on the points table ahead of fellow Sabeto club Ravoravo Rabbitohs in second spot, followed closely by Lautoka’s

Saru Dragons in third place.

Vodafone Championship Maroons State match commissioner Vela Tawake said they had been forced to host round seven competition at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka on October 7 because of the unavailability of grounds in Lautoka and Nadi this weekend.

Tawake said this would be the only round that would be played in Sigatoka.

“It is good news for fans of the Sigatoka-based clubs as they will see teams playing on their home turf,” he said.

“It will be something exciting for them as well. Both the

Tigers teams (Vatutoko and Namoli) will kick off proceedings at 9am.

“The Coastline Roos will face Sabeto Roosters in the curtain-raiser to the feature match which will be between the Saru Dragons and Burdekin Tyre Roosters.

“Both the Coastline Roos and Burdekin Tyre Roosters will be looking to post wins on their home soil against their higher ranked opponents. They will not lack support as the fans are expected to turn up in numbers to cheer them on.”

Tawake revealed that the round eight and round nine of the competition will be played at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

In round six, Saru Dragons hammered Yasawa Saints 622, West Coast Storm defeated Nadi Eels 26-10, Ravoravo Rabbitohs edged Coastline Roos 14-12, Burdekin Tyre Roosters beat Namoli West Tigers 3016 while the Vatutoko Tigers went down to Sabeto Roosters 7-30.
