One day before the new year

- ■ FRED WESLEY

WE are here once again, counting down the hours to another brand new year! When the sun sets today, we will farewell 2020. There can be no doubts about the fact that this year will stand out as a year filled to the brim with challenges for humanity.

As a nation seemingly far-removed from more developed countries, COVID-19, however, gave us a reality check.

The pandemic embraced nations around the world. We were never immune to the impact of the virus. When international borders were forced to shut down as the virus spread rapidly, we weren’t spared.

Our economy took a battering. Our lifelines, including our tourism industry suffered greatly.

Our unemployment figures shot sky-high, and this isn’t something that’s going to come down any time soon. It is a nightmare for governments around the world.

On the homefront, life has significantly changed. We have had to make adjustments to the new normal.

However, we are fortunately one of the few countries that are COVID-19 contained.

This year, we celebrated 50 years of independence, marking a milestone in our development as a young nation.

Earlier this month though, we were struck by the monster CAT 5 cyclone Yasa.

As the State machinery moves into rehabilitation mode, it is encouraging to see Fijians coming together to assist those affected.

We acknowledge all those working behind the scenes, including our neighbouring countries and international partners, to bring some semblance of order to the lives of those impacted by Yasa.

Death, it seems, isn’t a deterrent afterall for some people judging by accidents on our roads.

As we count down to the end of this year, we choose to reflect on a dangerous part of driving today.

Speeding is a killer, we know. When you throw in drunk drivers behind the wheel, it’s potent mix that can end in injury or even death.

As we gear up for the traditional celebrations tonight and tomorrow, let’s consider safety issues and control things that we can. Let’s adhere to social distancing rules.

Let’s set targets. Let’s persevere and be prepared to work hard in whatever it is we choose to do in the new year. Let’s reflect on the year that was, appreciate the many lessons learnt along the way, place the safety of our loved ones on the highest pedestal, and look ahead with optimism and hope to 2021.

On behalf of The Fiji Times, I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a very happy New Year.
