Driving test

-

I WRITE this letter to express my disgust at the decision of LTA (Land Transport Authority) to impose a driving test for people over 70 years of age. I wonder if this decision is based on some statistics collected from accidents on our national roads or is it simply the whim of someone in LTA.

This decision smacks of authoritarianism to make the life of senior citizens very difficult. In the first instance these unfortunate people are asked to provide the Medical Certificate of Fitness (Dr fees $35) with a copy of the latest passport size photograph. Upon presentation at the designated LTA office they are asked to make a written application to the CEO (Chief Executive Officer/LTA) for his approval. This takes some time and the senior citizens are asked to come back and collect the papers and to confirm the date and time for a driving test. So on the appointed day one has to go for a driving test. In all the senior citizens have to make at least three trips for the renewal of their driving licence. Sheer waste of time and additional cost to these retired people.

Furthermore, I consider this test a gross violation of the seniors’ human rights. Once they are medically certified fit I do not see any reason to take them out for a test. Sounds very childish and amateurish. It is also a source of embarrassment for people who must enjoy their retired life.

I, on behalf of all people over 70, humbly appeal to the minister responsible to have this driving test repealed.

I CAN understand how restless our 7s coach, Gareth Baber, must be as he has missed top level 7s action on the international field.

Had it not been the COVID-19 pandemic, our boys would have flexed their muscles at the Tokyo Olympics last year and would have been preparing for the Hamilton and Sydney 7s in January.

Nonetheless, Baber has more time on his plate and he has time to test the new kids – Taniela Sadrugu and Jone Manu (Suva), Nadi’s Vilikesa Driu and Kitione Salawa Junior, Namosi’s Onisi Ratave and Vinaya Habosi, Police 7s forward Josefa Talacolo and Tabadamu’s Simione Cece, Kaminieli Rasuku, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Nasoni Tulavu, Anasa Qaranivalu, Rusiate Nasove and Simione Kuruvoli alongside our regulars on the WRSS circuit – Jerry Tuwai, Kavekini Tabu, Kalione Nasoko, Ratu Meli Derenalagi, Waisea Nacuqu, Napolioni Bolaca, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Livai Ikanikoda, Kitione Taliga, Alasio Naduva, Josua Vakakurunabili and Asaeli Tuivuaka.

Hence, the camps will be important in terms of maintaining the team spirit and bonding.

It was pleasing to read that after the hectic season, our heroes closed off 2020 with a hike to Mt Korobaba and they looked in high spirits with our trainer Nacanieli Cawanibuka.

Isa, vinaka vakalevu boys for your efforts last year and looking forward to the Olympics and WRSS circuit!
