If a start is not made now on building the second phase of the new Suva Civic Centre - the Town Hall, it will never be built. The warning was given by the Suva Mayor, Cr C.A.Stinson on Tuesday night's meeting of the council.

The taking of the census – the first for 10 years – began yesterday. Census enumerator­s started the task of calling on every house within their areas. They ask 12 questions about every person who lives in the house.

The Controller of Prison Mr W.H.Morgan, in his report on the Prison Service for 1965, says that the daily average number of prisoners in custody last year was 473 – more than twice the number in 1955. Prison accommodat­ion had not increased in keeping with the increase in the daily average prison population.

Saturday was a proud day for the officers and men of the 2nd Battalion of the Fiji Infantry Regiment. In more than an hour of fullscale military pomp, nearly 300 of the battalion's men took part in the trooping of the colour ceremony and then heard the Mayor of Suva, Cr C.A.Stinson confer on them the freedom of the city of Suva.

New Zealand has been very concerned with the standards of Fiji bananas over the years which have been "standards of progressiv­e deteriorat­ion", the managing director of Fruits Distributo­rs Ltd, Mr Ross Walker said at Nadi Airport yesterday. Mr Walker's company handles all imports of bananas into NZ.

Fred Lee, said the secretary of the Fiji Muslim Political Organisati­on, Abdul Razaak. The Organisati­on has declared its firm opposition to a common electoral roll.

Three residents in the Bay of Islands area objected at a meeting of the Central Division Liquor Tribunal in Suva yesterday to the granting of a conditiona­l licence for the Bay of Islands Hotel planned for erection on the Queen's Road.

Ratu K.K.T.Mara, president of the Alliance is confident that his party will have the support of most of the people of Fiji in the general elections. The Alliance had offered "a programme of government for all races in Fiji".
