Judo revival

- By MAIKELI SERU

FIJI Judo Federation (FJF) is looking at reviving its schools and club competitions nationwide to promote the sport and help in the safety of young Fijian people, girls and women.

FJF development director Simione Kuruvoli Sr, one of the renowned Fijian sports personnel, said the new executives of the sport had aimed to improve the sport nationwide.

“Judo has many benefits,” the former national rep said.

“It is an art. It helps in healthy living and helps in self-defence. As the year begins, we plan to conduct a lot of training sessions to teach people who are interested to play judo.

“We are targetting schools and young people because judo can help safeguard young people. Nowadays there are a lot of abuse, rapes and misconducts. Judo can help solve these because it is a disciplined sport. It does not only train people to be involved in the sport, it helps build a disciplined character to become better persons. Juso helps control anger and emotions.

“We are conducting free judo lessons and clinics at the Judo Training Centre beside Nabua Primary School in Suva. We start on Monday (today) from 10am to 12 midday and in the afternoon from three to four O’clock teaching younsters simple techniques. In this early stage of training, kids attend fun training and basic self-defence, especially to girls. It teaches them how to look after themselves in dangerous situations.”

Kuruvoli can be contacted on 9493882.
