Golf exposure for unfortunate kids

- By MAIKELI SERU

STUDENTS of The Gospel School for the Deaf at Samabula, Suva, will have a chance to meet some of the best local golfers at the best course in the country on January 30.

This is when the charity golf Ambrose tournament to raise funds for their school will take place at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club course on Denarau Island in Nadi.

Tournament organiser and the school’s chairman of trustees, Howard Politini said the day would include a meet and greet by students with participating golfers and guests.

“This is an opportunity to highlight what is very critical and that is the need to assist our disabled group,” Politini said.

“Many of the students come from village and poor families. Some of them, who are in Year 1 are eight to nine years old because they were left to stay home when they were young. Even though they are late starters, all we want is for them to attend school. There have been some of them who had gone through the school and are now working. We look after them for 24 hours and a little help from individuals mean a lot.

“They will be at the golf course to meet the golfers and mix with people on the day. It will be an exciting day for them. We will have them there with interpreters and a chance to know what our deaf children go through. “We have children from around the region such as Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Cook Islands and Fiji. We are the only school in the South Pacific who are for children who are deaf. We rely on assistance such as funding, buses, and any help that can help educate these children.”

The tournament will have 100 golfers who would be split up in teams of four.

Politini is also calling for corporate sponsors to help in the worthy cause.

Registration is $400 per team. It starts with registration at 8.30am, event briefing at 9.20am and a shotgun start at 9.30am.

He urged members of the public to contribute to the event. Email entries can be sent to Amitesh Chandra on amitesh. chandra@westin.com
