Work together

Proper planning, shop wisely

- By LOSALINI VUKI

AS we approach the start of a new school year, renowned local psychologist Selina Kuruleca advises families to budget and spend prudently during this difficult time.

She said school items you may still have from 2020 could be re-used.

“Just give those bags a good scrub, polish sandals and use what still fits,” she said.

“Friends and relatives that are in a position to assist, please do assist. Children be mindful that some of us your parents maybe having a difficult time meeting your needs, please help us to help you by bearing with us.”

Ms Kuruleca says parents could communicate to their teachers the difficulties they may be having.

“Working collaboratively, we could achieve a lot,” she said.

“And finally to our teachers, please take care of yourselves, prepare well and ensure you are OK, then we can be sure our kids will be OK. Get extra support from your school admin, use external support structures and help each other out. Lets work together to make 2021 better for all of us. In what little way you could help, through a small healthy lunch, extra pencils and pass me down uniforms and sandals — let’s do it together.”

Meanwhile, Teresia Waqalevu says this year her children will reuse their old school bags, shoes and even some of their uniforms.

“The stationery items are expensive so I’ve kept my budget to $300 only,” she said.

“For parents who are doing their back to school shopping — please shop smartly. Always compare and check the prices of items.”

Ms Waqalevu is from Tavuki, Taveuni and has five children — four of which are attending school this year.
