Marist 7s prizemoney

TIKARAM: PREFERENCE IS TO SHARE AMONG CLUBS

- By NOA BIUDOLE

MARIST Rugby Club president Lawrence Tikaram said if in the likely scenario that the Fiji Shadow 7s team wins the 45th Fiji Bitter Marist Sapphire 7s tournament, the main cup prizemoney would be shared by participating teams.

The main prizemoney is $10,000.

“Our preference is the money goes back to the teams,” Tikaram said yesterday during the first day of the tournament.

“If the Fiji team wins and should we get the money back, I know the Fiji Rugby Union will do the right thing, as organisers of the event we would of course have to take out whatever administration costs, but we will provide that money back to the participating teams.”

Meanwhile, the first day of pool games for the under-21 and women’s competition was marred by heavy rain yesterday. It halted the games for about an hour.

Tournament director Koli Korovulavula said games were stopped to allow Fiji Sports Council officials to inspect the grounds.

“Due to the weather situation, as of 2pm (yesterday), we stopped the games from continuing because of player safety which remained paramount,” Korovulavula said.

Heavy rain flooded the surface of the ANZ Stadium ground, tracks and water spilled into the control room. Games were later played at Buckhurst Ground.
