Metformin, diabetes and kidneys

IT’S disappointing that politicians find time to waste their energy on attacking our Health Minister, Dr Waqainabete, after all he’s done and is doing for Fiji - Re: Keeping Fiji COVID-safe. Cheers for this, Dr Waqainibete. I’m registered for my vaccine, ready to roll.

Seriously, I believe Dr Waqainabete is right; metformin long-term is bad for diabetes and the kidneys. Fiji does not need this.

I believe a pill alone cannot change the poor effects of a sugar-laden diet which continues to kill our Pacific Island people, but changing our diets can. This is far more cost-effective for Fiji too.

If we would reduce most carbohydrates radically and take refined sugars completely out of our diet and drinks, we won’t need to be dependent on drugs like metformin any longer.

The key is a diet change, back to wholesome natural Fijian homegrown foods: our fish, lolo, meats, greens, bele, ota, rourou, baigani, okra, pumpkin and all our other natural homegrown fruit and veges, rather than a pill.

Surely, our politicians must have better things to organise than demanding unnecessary apologies in the papers from our Health Minister? A loyal Fijian throughout this pandemic, he deserves a medal – he and his teams of medical frontline workers.

I believe metformin is not good long-term and I agree with the Health Minister. Well said, Dr Waqainabete.

Perhaps this politician has given himself high blood pressure, needlessly, demanding ridiculous apologies from our Health Minister.
