Navy to deploy vessels

“The effective implementa­tion of the port state measures agreement ultimately contribute­s to the long-term sustainabi­lity of Fiji’s fisheries and ocean resources; this will also complement Fiji’s targets to have 30 per cent of its waters dedicated as marine protected areas by 2030.”

He said the provisions of the port state measures agreement applies to fishing vessels seeking entry into a designated port of a state which is different from their flag state.

He added it will enable the ministry to build its capacity to better assist the domestic fishing industry and its stakeholde­rs to ensure optimum returns and economic growth for the nation.

THE Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) RFNS Kacau with the RFNS Volasiga and survey motor-boat, Ikavuka conducted its hydrograph­ic survey tasking in the West last week.

The RFNS Kacau was utilised last week for recalibrat­ion of survey equipment after a lapse of a few months.

According to the Fiji Navy the RFNS Volasiga also conducted a reconnaiss­ance of possible automatic tide gauge stations in Kadavu while the RFNS supported a similar team in Wairiki.

The Mamanuca and Nadi, according to the Fiji Navy were critical and busy shipping routes for Fiji in terms of maritime trade and maritime tourism and ocean economy industries like fisheries and the RFN is putting additional efforts into the area to ensure that the waters are properly chartered.

The RFNS Kacau, RFNS Volasiga, RFNS Kikau and Ikavuka will be deployed next month.
