- By ZANZEER SINGH

THE winner of the Digicel Fiji Muslim Sports Association (FMSA) Inter District Championship at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this weekend will walk away $1000 richer together with the Haji Mohammed Rafiq trophy.

A total of 16 teams are part of the tournament. The FMSA has introduced the veteran’s division for the first time.

Two matches were played earlier this week. On Tuesday at the

Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour, Valelevu defeated Rewa 4-2 while on Wednesday at Prince Charles Park defending champion Meigunyah beat Sabeto 1-0.

FMSA president Javed Ahmed said four teams were part of the veterans competition.

“There are two teams from the West and two from the South,” Ahmed said.

“The teams will play in a round robin format with the top two teams qualifying for the final on Sunday.”

Ahmed said there was big hype about the tournament since it was being held after a lapse of one year.

He said the level of football will be high with the inclusion of national and district reps in the teams.

“We did not hold the tournament last year because of the sporting restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ahmed said.

“This year we are holding the tournament in a big way. All the top teams are participating.

“The district and national reps will be representing their respective teams so we expect high quality matches throughout the weekend. A new trophy has been donated in the name of the former president of FMSA Haji Mohammed Rafiq who passed away last year. We expect a good turnout during the Easter break.”

Matches will resume at 8am today with hosts Nadi taking on Maro. Pool A: Meigunyah, Sabeto, Varavu, Makoi; Pool B: Nasinu, Lautoka, Navua, Labasa; Pool C: Valelevu, Cuvu, Drasa, Rewa; Pool
