Northland aims to leave no one behind

- By NOA BIUDOLE

NORTHLAND Rugby has taken disabilities to heart.

The returning Skipper Provincial Cup side has stood aside from the pack to champion and raise awareness for people around Fiji that are challenged with disabilities everyday.

Speaking during the launch of the collaboration at the National Council for Persons with Disabilities campus yesterday, Fiji Disabled People’s Federation president Josko Wakaniyasi said it was a historic occasion.

“Today is a true celebration of sports, considering that most Fijians also acquire a disability in contact sports and one of the fiercest is rugby,” Wakaniyasi said.

“To recognise the efforts undertaken by the AYI Northland Rugby Union, it is humbling.”

Wakaniyasi said what started as a conversation had now flourished on a grand scale.

“The interest the union (Northland) would like to support and assist with visibility and contribute in the global initiative of leaving no one behind is commendable.”

Northland Rugby president Metuisela Mucunabitu reiterated that the drive behind the union was to ensure that opportunities were given to everyone and that again no one was left behind.

“We want everyone to know that there is an opportunity, that if you have the talent Northland Rugby Union will give you the space.”

Following through the promise, Northland will feature two players with partial disabilities in their development side against Tailevu today.’
