Undue stress on expectant mothers

- By JALE DAUCAKACAKA

THE COVID-19 crisis and uncertainty surrounding it can cause undue stress for expectant mothers, leading to health problems or complications.

Local psychotherapist Selina Kuruleca shared these sentiments in response to the anxieties shared by some expectant mothers regarding attending antenatal clinics amidst the recent outbreak in the country.

“Most of, if not all, the attention and resources are drawn to the COVID-19 crisis and other aspects of health including maternal health, reproductive health, sexual health and mental health become secondary,” she said.

Ms Kuruleca said the challenge of reaching antenatal care could be considerable for some women and it was important that they received support.

“There are risks associated with not receiving antenatal care, including difficulty with monitoring the baby and the mother and general welfare of both if they do not attend the clinics.”

She said one possible measure to reduce risks and anxieties for women in attending antenatal care clinics was to re-engage retired midwives and nurses in their local communities to attend to expectant mothers, while following COVID-safe protocols.

“This would mean getting the data of where the largest number of pregnant women reside and setting up mobile units.

“Attending antenatal clinics maybe a chore at this stage but please, for the health, safety and wellbeing of your unborn child as well as yours and your family, do continue to seek out the antenatal clinic.”
