MOSESE Nabainivalu has experienced what its like to be unemployed and going through personal problems.

“Even though I faced a lot of hardship, it does not take away the fact that I should not give up and should keep my faith in the Lord,” the 45-year-old said.

Mr Nabainivalu was one of the many workers at technical colleges laid off on December 31 2020.

“It was hard because I was used to earning an income every week and all of a sudden I didn’t have a paycheck.”

His career started at the Water Authority of Fiji in 2005 and became a fitter in 2015.

Then from 2015 to the end of last year, Mr Nabainivalu worked as a security officer at the Fiji National University Technical College at Naduna, Labasa, before he was transferred to FNU Technical College in Vuci, Nausori, in 2019.

He said he never gave up and kept on looking for work after he was laid off.

Despite being separated from his wife for the past two years and going through hardship, Mr Nabainivalu said he did not see it as an obstacle.

“I always stayed positive and believed that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Mr Nabainivalu said he began his education at Ratu Sauvoli Primary School where he attended Class One to Class Eight.

“After that, I left school and stayed home as my parents were finding it hard to support us in our education.

“At that time, our parents had to pay for our tuition and other expenses.”

He has seven siblings - two brothers and five sisters.

Mr Nabainivalu was brought up in the village. His father was a carpenter and his mother passed away when he was only a teenager.

He said all the experiences and hardship he went through taught him to endure hardships.

Mr Nabainivalu said he was grateful that he was able to work as a security officer at the China Railway depot in Luvuluvu last month.

“Now, when we are having COVID-19 and lockdown, I am able to find work and earn a living.

“I am able to earn some wages and I am just so grateful for the opportunity that came my way.

“During the five-day SuvaNausori lockdown, I was working at the depot.

“I am watching over the machinery at the depot as China Railway is contracted to work on the expansion of the Nausori Airport.”
