Baber happy with discipline

- By ZANZEER SINGH

THE Fijian 7s team players will continue to practise safe COVID-19 protocols despite getting fully vaccinated ahead of the PacificAus Sports Oceania Sevens tournament that starts this afternoon.

The national side received its second jab in Brisbane last week.

Fiji 7s team head coach Gareth Baber said the players had not faced any side effects.

Baber said they were conscious of the number of cases in Australia.

“There were no side effects and no one was affected, it was all straight forward,” he said.

“There was excellent work to get us that vaccination. It was hugely important to get it in a view that there is some protection for us but equally we have to be mindful of the fact that we have to be in a bubble.

“We have to be protected around us even though there is no lockdown in Townsville. We are conscious that there are cases in Australia and we are conscious of creating a mindset for our wellbeing and looking after each other.”

Baber said they would practise all the protocols even when they are in Japan for the Tokyo Olympic Games. He said they were remembering everyone back home in their daily devotions.

“It is about being disciplined when in the public,” he said.

“When we go to Japan, what we have to do is obey those rules there as well.

“The second jab has given us the opportunity that at the back of our minds is coming into protection. But we are very mindful of what is happening around the rest of the world.

“We are mindful of the people back in Fiji and we are praying every morning and every evening for our families, our friends and our country that you are safe.”
