Jersey saga to be resolved soon
THE Flying Fijians and the Fiji Rugby Union are expected to resolve the jersey issue which was a controversial topic of discussion after the 23-57 first Test loss in Dunedin last Saturday.
Team co-sponsor Fiji Airways had directed the promotional message 'Vaccinate Fiji' to be printed on the team's Nike jerseys for last week's match.
But it was stood down after a collective decision from the players who would not be distracted by the advert but who gave their hearts out against one of the best teams in the world.
Head coach Vern Cotter stood by his players saying insufficient notice was given to his band of professional players, so the players decided to wear a clear jersey last week.
"It was sprung on the players quite late and not a lot of consultation. It is a delicate subject for some and so it was probably better just to have a clean jersey," Cotter said after the first Test.
"The team showed solidarity and strength in what they did.
“The way they play will inspire people in Fiji.
“These guys are role models today."
The message was shown on the electronic advertising billboards on the ground during the Test.
Cotter hopes the issue could be resolved soon so that it does not add pressure on the players and affect the way they play.
"Everybody is discussing the situation and there will be an announcement or something will be sorted before the end of the week."
Not all rugby lovers in Fiji will view the message during the Tests because of the inability to telecast on free to air national TV channels.
