- By WANSHIKA KUMAR

ALL COVID-19 deaths recorded between July 12 and August 9 were in the Central Division.

This, according to Ministry of Health and Medical Services permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

He said they recorded 121 new cases of COVID-19 during the 24-hour period that ended on Monday morning with 103 cases from the Western Division and 18 cases from the Central Division.

Dr Fong said following further review of their active case database, they had an additional nine COVID-19 deaths to report for the period of July 12 to August 9.

“All deaths were reported from the Central Division,” he said.

“An analysis of the nine deaths has highlighted that individuals were aged between 49 and 83 years, 44 per cent were males, 67 per cent of the individuals died at home or on their way to the hospital and 67 per cent of these deaths were unvaccinated, the remaining 33 per cent received only one dose of the vaccine.

“This means that there were no deaths of individuals who were fully vaccinated.

“There have been 11 more deaths of COVID-19 positive patients. However, these deaths have been classified as non-COVID deaths by their doctors.

“The doctors have determined that these deaths were caused by a serious pre-existing medical condition and not COVID-19.”

He said there were currently 111 COVID-19 patients admitted in hospital.

“Thirty one patients are admitted at the Lautoka Hospital and 80 are admitted at CWM Hospital, St Giles and Makoi.

“Three patients are considered to be in severe condition and three are in critical condition.”
