Hill ready to rumble

- By PAULINI CURUQARA

FIJI's top amateur boxer Winston Hill is glad that his boxing gym has been reopened after six months after the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Hill said it had been a big challenge for him when the country went into lockdown in March because it stopped sports and closed sporting facilities.

"The reopening has been a very exciting news after six difficult months of being forced to close down," the Commonwealth games bronze medallist said.

"We have seen many business closed and business-wise, it had been difficult to cope. We are just excited to get back, excited to see the members rolling in to the doors and we are looking forward to the 80 per cent vaccination where we can include sports.

"We are anticipating that boxing is in the right track in terms of getting contact sports back to normalcy. Bringing back our boxers and interacting with our clients are the best options for the sport right now."

Hill said the priority remained on ensuring that all boxers and all Fijians were safe during these difficult times.

"With our operations, we are compliant to the current regulations. We had to install the Care Fiji app, the QR code app, the Vaccination app and pressure tool in place where we double checked the reference numbers. We installed cleaning stations throughout the gym for clients to spray down and decontaminate used equipment.

"Throughout the day, we go through free deep cleaning processes after the morning sessions. After our lunch classes from 1-2pm, we got a half an hour cleaning session and then in the evening from 8-8.30pm to make sure that the place is up to par with regulations.

"A lot of people have their own personal opinions. For us, we have been double vaccinated and we are fully compliant."
