- By WAISALE KOROIWASA

FIJI is famous in the world of kickboxing because of Carlos Hicks.

Not forgetting where comes from Carlos ‘The Flying Fijian’ Hicks is making a name not only for him but for the country of his birth.

Pacific Media Network reported Hicks is the WKBF NZ middleweight champion, IKBF Middleweight Commonwealth champion, South Pacific middleweight champion, IKBF super middle champion, King in the Ring champion.

His record stands at 38 wins six losses and one draw.

Born in Suva and lived his early days in Lautoka, Fiji, he moved to New Zealand when he was five, lived in Auckland most of his life, moved to Hamilton in 2010 and started fighting in 2012, the report said.

His dad has links in Votua, Ba, and Samoa while his mom has mixed blood of Rewa and Vanuatu. He has two sisters.

With an aim to make a name in rugby, with his tight schedule in working shift he though he could join a co-worker who was a kick boxer.

Hicks had his first fight in September 2012 and fell in love with it.

“I believe life is a gift and sharing is just as much as important as receiving. Knowledge is Power and belief is paramount. Without risks there is no reward,” he told Enspire.

“My goal is to become the best fighter I can be so later I can become a great coach.

“Constantly evolving and learning new things which I can implement in my fights and also gaining knowledge to teach the younger generations of up and coming fighters.”

From a nervous start, Carlos became the first Fijian to win a world title in kick boxing after a fourth round knockout win over title holder Sam Gough in Auckland, in March 2018.

Also the same year Hicks took the King in the Ring 8-man series 75kg title, after defeating Blood Diamond.
