Hazardous traffic roundabout
THE road markings are an effective way of communicating information to drivers on the road and making the road markings visible and understandable is vital for road safety.
They help road users to navigate the road systems, making us aware of upcoming hazards and of key bits of information to help drive appropriately for the situation.
The markings serve as a psychological barrier and signify the delineation of traffic path and its lateral clearance from traffic hazards for the safe movement of traffic.
Traffic signs and road markings are silent speakers to the road users.
Every road user should know the marking and signs on the road and the meaning of it. And it is important the Fiji Roads Authority maintain such administrative signage on our roads.
There is a roundabout created not long ago at the junction of the Kings Rd and the Wainibuku Rd opposite the newlybuilt Rup’s complex in Nasinu, 9 miles.
The roundabout was painted in white in the centre of the junction at the road level and the motorist adhered to the right hand rule.
There are two roundabout signage still standing on either side of the roundabout on Kings Rd.
However, because of the heavy traffic flow, the white paint faded away which is creating confusion for the drivers.
Some still treat it as a traffic roundabout and others are treating the situation as a road intersection.
There is frequent horn tooting, yelling and complete bafflement and I believe accidents may have occurred because of the inability of the Fiji Roads Authority to implement a good, timely road management repair plans with the view to reduce collision and driver stress.
This hotspot and the dubiety must be eliminated without any further delays. SATISH NAKCHED
