Sunita’s collection

- By ATASA WILLIAMS

HER paintings are often a reflection of her feelings. For Sunita Mathews also known as Soni’s flair, inspiring everyone with her art is something she hopes to achieve whenever she paints.

Born and raised in Sabeto, Nadi the mother of three said she was always good with her hands.

As a child, Sunita said she used to watch her grandmother work on her embroidery and was always curious to know more.

She said her grandmother taught her how to do embroidery which she said was her first introduction to colours.

However she said didn’t pick up a paint brush until her children started learning how to colour between the lines

Sunita is quickly mastering abstract work, which is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.

“My children are better artists than me,” she said. Professionally a real estate salesperson for Spark

Realty she also has a home-based business called Black Butterfly Fiji.

Sunita finds it great that a lot of local artists are now crafting their art.

“COVID-19 plays a crucial role in bringing out those hidden talents,” she said.

She thanked her husband for always encouraging her to strive and be better with what she does.

“My message to artists out there is to spend time with people who push you to succeed and inspire you to better your trade.

“Remember failure just means you are learning so don’t let anything hold you back. Start today if you are thinking of doing so.”

Apart from painting she also makes jewellery, teacup candles, hair accessories and tote bags to name a few.
