Libraries issue
CAN our libraries in Fiji, both academic and public libraries be given some importance and positive changes be considered? Some academic libraries do not have qualified library assistant. A university has a library assistant who has been working there for years without even having a relevant certificate. Some high schools are even directing their librarians to attain at least a certificate so why not the university?
I believe in high schools; a certificate should be sufficient whereas diploma level at universities or higher depending on their post.
I believe the merit of some public librarians needs checking as well. I believe some librarians have been holding on to positions for ages without upgrading themselves. Some have reached way above their retirement age and are dragging on without any recent upgrade or new innovations.
Some libraries seem to be stagnant without any improvements or recent changes with new recruits. Some library related students are there, struggling to look for a library job. Library is a rare field, and if the new recruits cannot be made available, this course should not be offered.
It has also been noticed with this course available especially for attachment, COVID is being specified for not accepting students to complete their final unit. We understand the COVID situation, but how else students are supposed to complete their attachments if the very own institute that offers the course, do not take their students for attachment? Might as well do not offer the unit at all until COVID gets eradicated. We all know that’s going to take really long.
It’s high time “some” libraries are given fresh ideas with some new recruits. They should be given a chance. “Some” libraries and librarians need a major makeover. With the online versions and researches being introduced, some changes also have to be done to cater for the new challenges.
