Survey assesses students’ success

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

A SURVEY carried out on a primary school in Cakaudrove discovered that more students in the past decade failed to secure jobs compared with those who attended in the 1980s and 1990s.

The survey on Batibalavu District School, carried out by teachers and the education committee of Vakativa Village, revealed that only five students who went through the primary school secured jobs between the years 2000 and 2020.

Revealing this to villagers during the Vakativa Fiji Day celebration, committee member Iosefo Biroki said in the 1970s decade, 160 students went through the school.

“In the 1980s, 65 students went through this primary school, reached tertiary level after secondary and most found jobs except five people,” he said.

“In the 1990s, all of those who attended found jobs except 12 people.

“But in the 2000 decade, so far, only five have been employed while the rest have returned to their villages and have remained unemployed.”

This, Mr Biroki said, was a major concern for the committee and parents needed to do something about it.

He urged parents to play their roles as designed by God and be vigilant about their children’s welfare.

“It’s very important for us to support our children to do well in school and achieve their future and dreams,” Mr Biroki said.

“We need to change our mentality and rise above our situations. Enough of settling with the idea of going to school and becoming a grog farmer.

“If our village has produced great rugby players, including our Fijiana captain Rusila Nagasau and sevens rep Benito Masilevu, then we can produce pilots, nurses and doctors.”

Mr Biroki urged parents to support their children and spend more time with them.
