Family mourns woman’s death

- By LUKE NACEI

AS thousands of Fijian families gather to celebrate Christmas this weekend, a Savusavu family is mourning the death of a 58-year-old woman who perished in a house fire in Naveria, Savusavu.

National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane urged Fijians to be more vigilant and keep a close watch on family, friends and neighbours especially during the festive season.

Mr Sowane said the woman was a stroke victim, was partially immobile and alone at home at the time of the incident.

He said the woman’s husband had gone to pick his daughter when the tragedy occurred.

Mr Sowane said the fivebedroom wooden and corrugated iron house the victim was in was fully engulfed in flames when the NFA arrived at the scene.

“The fire crew managed to extinguish the fire but it was very unfortunate that the body of a woman was found,” he said.

“It is sad to hear that a life has been lost in the incident during this festive season.

“We at NFA urge every Fijian to be more vigilant and keep a watch on your families, friends and neighbours to avoid such mishaps.”

Mr Sowane is calling on members of the public to be cautious during this time of the year.

“We are only one day away from Christmas and we remind people to be more responsible and mindful of the danger that is surrounding them if fire safety is not taken seriously. We remind homeowners to check for all fire safety precautions before they leave home or are deciding to leave their homes vacant during this festive season.

“Always alert your neighbours that you will be away and in case of any fire emergency to call the authority and inform them.

“We encourage everyone to make it a norm to sit with their family members and discuss fire risks and how to manage it.”
